What are the main applications of bovine ultrasound?

In animal husbandry, ultrasonic technology is widely used in cattle health monitoring and breeding management. Specifically, ultrasound for veterinary purposes (also known as veterinary diagnostic ultrasound imaging system or veterinary ultrasound machine) is mainly used in the following areas:

Pregnancy diagnosis: Ultrasound can be used to confirm whether the cow is pregnant and when. This is critical for pasture management, as it helps ranchers determine dry milk periods, calving dates, and adjust feed and care plans.

Pre-transfer examination: During the embryo transfer procedure, ultrasound is used to assess the follicle development of the donor cow and the uterine environment of the recipient cow to improve the transfer success rate.

Reproductive system examination: Ultrasound can be used to examine the ovaries and uterus of the cow to diagnose possible diseases or abnormalities such as cysts, inflammation or endometritis.

Breast disease detection: Ultrasound can help identify breast diseases such as mastitis, which is especially important in dairy cows because mastitis can affect the quality and yield of dairy products.

Joint and soft tissue injuries: For cattle with injuries or suspected bone, muscle or joint problems, ultrasound can provide non-invasive imaging to aid in diagnosis and treatment.

Liver, heart and other internal organs examination: Ultrasound can also be used to assess other internal organ health of cattle, including heart function, liver disease, kidney disease, etc.

Benefits of ultrasound examination
Veterinary ultrasound examination causes less stress to animals and is a painless and relatively safe method of diagnosis. Veterinarians typically prefers to use a portable veterinary B-mode ultrasound diagnostic device with a rechargeable battery. After applying the ultrasound gel to acoustic lens of the probe, then move the ultrasonic probe over the surface of the cow's body to see the internal structure through the image on the screen.

For imaging the reproductive system of cattle, a transrectal linear array probe or a transrectal convex array probe is generally used. Before preparing for the inspection, the operator needs to remove the feces from the cow rectum to reduce the impact of the gas in the feces on the ultrasound, so as to obtain the ideal ultrasound image.

A variey of digital B/W veterinary ultrasound and veterinary color doppler ultrasound has been exported to over 130 countries over the past 17 years.
